The Green Griffin Pub

The Green Griffin Pub was established in 1994 on the premise that there are two basic sorts of beer - Real Piss and Real Ale.

Without real ale, life would be pintless slogan

The pub’s motto, "Without real ale, life would be pintless", reflects this notion.

The Green Griffin Guise, a small group of regulars, meet once a month at the pub to evaluate three or four brews. Our numerical ratings are scored on a scale from 1 to 10, and a little research will reveal that there are indeed a few exceptions to the pub’s premise. A strong preference for English-style top-fermented beers is nevertheless prevalent.

It is unfortunate that bottle- and cask-conditioned ales are quite rare in our part of the world. On the other hand, the proliferation of microbreweries and brewpubs across North America over the past two decades has assured availability of a number of very good beers in most regions.

Our ratings will also demonstrate that perfection is difficult to achieve. As you review our listings, please keep it in mind that we consider any beer with a score of 7.5 or higher to be quite good, and many beers with lower scores (i.e., down to about 4) are still enjoyable - or at least drinkable.
